Dreher Park - 1963 to Present

Some time in the early 1900's this area had begun to be
used as a Camp ground and large city dump was also present.
Below is the earliest reference I have found so far of Bacon Park.

The Main use of Bacon Park in the Early days was as a City Tourist Camp,
which had Campsites, a Bath house and some small houses for rent.
There were also docks along the lake for boats and plenty of fishing.

The Great Hurricane of 1928 came ashore on September 16, 1928.
Over 2000 people lost they lives, with most drowning in the flooding
caused by severe flooding of the Everglades!
The Hurricane did massive damage to the Park area and the few buildings.

By 1929 many of the Camp Buildings were rebuilt and it was opened
by the city again for business.

In this article published in 1933 about City Planning,
they mention Bacon Park and a man named Bingham ?

In the late 1950's, As a young boy I spent many hours exploring
Bacon Park, starting from the north side of Summit Blvd and going
north. There were plenty of Brime, Catfish, and Bass in the lakes
and waterways throughout the park.
On the north end of the park was the Island Landscape company
with a lot of acreage up to Southern Blvd.

I remember on August 21, 1956, at 6PM hearing the sounds of a
USAF C-124 come over my home area with engine problems.
My Parents house was in the flight path of the planes heading
to the Palm Beach Air Force base. This one didn't make it.
We had just finished dinner, so I took off on my bike to see
what happened. It had come down in the middle of the Island
landscape nursery property and there was a very large fire.
Three of crew survived and sadly, three perished.

This article published in 1980 about Paul A. Dreher contained a
amount of information of the history of Bacon Park and the
creation of Dreher Park, due to his long association in the area
and he served as the City Parks director for over 30 years.

Another Interesting Item I found

The 2 million gallon water tank located on Parker Ave and Kaye street was
 built in 1925 !

Talk about aging city facilities .. 86 years old
I hope the city is keeping this maintained !
